Update : YBA plan for games for 2020-2021 Season

UpdatedWednesday October 28, 2020 byBlessing Handley.

Dear YBA families,

A league in Southern Maine has decided to move forward to offer games this winter in (3) 3-week sessions. YBA has decided to register travel teams for 7th-8th grade for the first session which runs Dec. 4-Dec. 20. Players will be selected for the travel team based on assessments that will be held at our Sunday skills and drills sessions. Registration numbers will determine if there will be one team per grade or a combination of grades. Most of the 7th and 8th graders just completed YBA's fall clinics so there is good momentum to move forward with this age group now.

The plan is to then register 5th-6th grade teams for the second session, which runs Jan 1-Jan 17. The travel teams for those grades will be selected the first week of December based on assessments during the skills and drills sessions. Whether or not those teams play in the league's February session will be based on coach and parent feedback.

Players must be registered for YBA's Phase 1 Skills and Drills in order to be selected for one of these teams. Players who accept a spot on a travel team will need to cover the cost of league registration which is an estimated additional $45 per player per league session that the team registers for, as well as, the fees for skills and drills for Phase 1 and Phase 2. Our goal is for grades 5-8 travel teams to play one session as explained above; additional sessions will be based on coach and parent feedback/interest.  Games for 3rd and 4th grade to be determined.

Our understanding is that travel games will be played in Saco or Portland, however, there is an off chance of Waterville. There could also be an admission fee of $7 per game day for parents. There is an extreme shortage of gym availability and we are unable to access school gyms. The skills and drills sessions will also have to serve as practice time. In the past, it has been a challenge scheduling 21 teams using 5 gyms 7 days a week so the current gym situation is less than ideal, but we've got to work with what we have and something is better than nothing.

These are challenging times and details are changing rapidly. The gym rental fee and league fees are out of our hands so we had to adjust costs in order to provide opportunities for those who want to play.  We are providing an update about what we know at this time so you can make a decision whether or not to register for YBA Skills and Drills, which starts this weekend.

Please go to www.gngyba.org to register as soon as possible.
